24 Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor In Gold Coast
How is the Test Conducted?
A cuff is securely wrapped around your upper arm, typically positioned near the inner bend. As the device inflates, you may feel tightness, along with brief numbness or tingling. After the measurement, the cuff slowly deflates, easing the pressure.
A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers, representing when blood flow to your arm stops and resumes. These numbers indicate the pressure within your arteries.
Your doctor may recommend 24-hour (ambulatory) blood pressure monitoring to track fluctuations throughout the day and night. This involves wearing a blood pressure unit with a cuff on your upper arm, connected to a monitor that hangs from a shoulder strap.
Over the next 24 hours, your heart rate and blood pressure will be recorded every 20 to 30 minutes, including during sleep. When the cuff tightens, pause your activity and remain still until the reading is complete, which usually takes 30 to 40 seconds.
Fitting the 24-hour monitor takes about 15 minutes, including cuff placement and usage instructions. You will need to return to the hospital or clinic at the same time the following day for removal.
24-hour blood pressure monitoring provides insights into how your blood pressure varies throughout the day and night. This helps your doctor identify patterns, understand potential triggers, and determine if your levels are elevated. They will also inform you of your target blood pressure range. Since high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease, regular monitoring allows your doctor to assess whether treatment, including medication, is necessary.
No special preparations are necessary before getting the 24-hour blood pressure monitor fitted. You will receive instructions on how to ensure accurate readings while wearing the device.
Here are some tips to remember while using the monitor:
- Wear a loose-fitting shirt.
- Remain still during the readings (when the cuff tightens).
- Press the button on the monitor immediately if you experience symptoms like dizziness, headaches, chest pain, or sudden shortness of breath.
- Ensure the monitor remains connected at all times.
- Continue taking your medications as usual.
Regularly checking and understanding your blood pressure is vital for maintaining a healthy heart.
